Introduction
Reading Guide /
A university essay is not a polished first reaction; it is a reader-centered argument built around a nuanced, defensible thesis.
1. What This Lecture Is About / 这节课在讲什么
university writing expectations
-> authorial contribution and citation
-> thesis must be arguable
-> thesis must emerge from reading and questioning
-> complicate the thesis through conditions and counterarguments
-> outline the argument
-> build an introduction for the reader这也决定了课程的“剥洋葱”顺序:
ideas and argument
-> structure and paragraphs
-> sentences
-> advanced style
2. Class Flow /
- 区分 first-year writing 与 discipline-specific writing。
- 用 social media and anxiety 示范 thesis 的复杂化。
- 用 counterargument refine thesis。
3. The Writing You May Meet at University /
Knowledge Point 1: Writing Changes by Stage and Discipline
- 学习阶段;
- 国家与学校体系;
- academic discipline;
- assignment purpose;
- intended audience
A good paper is defined partly by the discipline, genre, purpose, and audience.
Knowledge Point 2: First-Year Writing Often Centers on Argument and Analysis
- argumentative essay;
- analytical essay;
- literary analysis。
The first-person narration increases suspense by limiting the reader to the narrator’s incomplete knowledge.
Knowledge Point 3: Upper-Level Writing Becomes Discipline-Specific
| discipline | possible genres | central work |
|---|---|---|
| economics | empirical paper, policy brief | analyze data, policy, or models |
| psychology | empirical research report | collect or analyze experimental data |
| many disciplines | literature review | synthesize a field and identify patterns or gaps |
| engineering | lab report, technical writing, design proposal, feasibility report | communicate methods, results, constraints, and design decisions |
| computer science | technical memo, report, proposal | explain systems, experiments, or technical recommendations |
| literature | literary analysis | close reading and evidence-based interpretation |
Knowledge Point 4: A Literature Review Is Synthesis, Not a List
Author A said...
Author B said...
Author C said...
- 领域如何发展;
- 哪些结论已经较稳定;
- 哪些研究彼此冲突;
- 哪里仍有 gap;
A literature review organizes existing scholarship into a meaningful account of what is known, debated, and still missing.
4. The Author’s Contribution /
Knowledge Point 5: Academic Writing Separates Your Voice from Sources
- select evidence;
- interpret evidence;
- connect sources;
- evaluate competing explanations;
- arrive at a defensible conclusion。
Citation tells the reader where another person’s contribution ends and your own reasoning begins.
Knowledge Point 6: Citation and AI Rules Are Assignment-Specific
- course syllabus;
- assignment instructions;
- instructor’s written AI policy;
- required citation style;
- institution’s academic-integrity policy。
Policy Boundary /
5. University Writing Is Not Timed-Test Writing /
Knowledge Point 7: Timed Writing Rewards a Quick Position
TOEFL / IELTS
- 快速 brainstorm;
- 把理由分类;
- 选择立场;
- 用通用例子展开;
- academic benefits;
- emotional support;
- social skills;
- possible loss of efficiency。
Knowledge Point 8: A University Thesis Should Not Be a First Reaction
If a thesis can be produced instantly without reading, investigation, or analysis, it is often too obvious to sustain a serious academic argument.
week 1: read, question, and develop the thesis
week 2: refine claims and build the outline
6. What Makes a Thesis Academic /
Knowledge Point 9: A Thesis Is Arguable
- a claim;
- an interpretation;
- a causal explanation;
- an evaluation;
- a recommendation;
Could an informed reader reasonably disagree with this sentence?
Knowledge Point 10: A Strong Thesis Is Defensible, Not Merely Controversial
- relevant evidence;
- a clear reasoning chain;
- defined scope;
- appropriate qualifications;
- awareness of likely objections。
Knowledge Point 11: A Nuanced Thesis Replaces Binary Thinking
Does social media exacerbate anxiety among young adults?
Social media increases anxiety among young adults.
Although social media is often blamed for anxiety, its effects depend partly on how passively users consume information and how strongly they engage in social comparison.
- 承认 common view;
- 拒绝单一线性因果;
- 提出 mechanism;
- 加入 condition;
Nuance does not mean vagueness. It means making the claim more precise by identifying mechanisms, conditions, limits, or competing explanations.
Knowledge Point 12: Complexity Should Come from Inquiry
What exactly is happening?How does it happen?Why does it happen?Under what circumstances is it true?When might it not be true?Compared with what?For whom?What would a skeptical reader say?Why does this matter?
7. Intellectual Curiosity /
Knowledge Point 13: Academic Writing Begins with Curiosity
consumer behavior:
- What motivates consumers to pay more?
- Is the purchase driven by environmental concern, identity signaling, brand, style, or peer influence?
business:
- How do firms balance higher production costs against reputation and market growth?
- Which environmental claims affect willingness to buy?
engineering / production:
- Which materials and processes reduce waste?
- What trade-offs appear in durability, cost, energy use, or recyclability?
Intellectual curiosity means responding to a topic with further questions, not merely receiving it as information.
8. Complication /
Knowledge Point 14: Complication Tests the First Version of the Claim
initial claim
-> does it always hold?
-> under what conditions?
-> what mechanism explains it?
-> what is the strongest alternative explanation?
-> revise the claim常见的 complication 方法:
| move | question | possible result |
|---|---|---|
| add a condition | Under what circumstances? | narrow the scope |
| identify a mechanism | How exactly? | explain causation |
| distinguish groups | For whom? | avoid overgeneralization |
| compare alternatives | Compared with what? | define the benchmark |
| anticipate objections | What would a critic say? | strengthen or qualify the claim |
| add a new lens | What changes from another perspective? | reveal another dimension |
Knowledge Point 15: Counterargument Is a Tool for Thinking
Anticipating the strongest counterargument helps reveal what your thesis still needs to explain.
流程:
- 写下 working thesis;
- 构造一个 informed skeptic 的 strongest objection;
- 判断 objection 是否推翻 thesis;
- 如果是,修改 thesis;
- 如果不是,明确 thesis 如何回应;
Knowledge Point 16: Qualification Is Not Weakness
academic writing 常用:
althoughwhileunder certain conditionsin many casesprimarilypartlymore significant than
Social media always causes anxiety.
Passive social-media use may intensify anxiety among users who are already prone to social comparison.
9. From Thesis to Outline /
Knowledge Point 17: Body Sections Should Answer Reader Questions
Section 1
Not all social-media interaction is harmful:
active communities may reduce isolation.
Section 2
Passive consumption can encourage social comparison.
Section 3
Pre-existing mindset and behavior help explain why outcomes differ.
Conclusion
The response should emphasize digital literacy rather than simple platform blame.
Knowledge Point 18: Significance Answers “So What?”
Why should I spend time reading this?
A conclusion may extend the significance of an established argument, but it should not introduce an unsupported new argument.
10. Reader-Centered Writing /
Knowledge Point 19: The Reader Should Spend Effort on Ideas, Not Decoding
- vocabulary 越罕见越好;
- sentence 越长越好;
The reader’s effort should go into evaluating the idea, not reconstructing the writer’s missing logic.
Knowledge Point 20: Every Sentence Creates an Expectation
- cause and effect;
- contrast;
- example;
- definition;
- qualification;
- sequence;
- problem and response;
- claim and evidence。
What does this sentence make the reader expect next?
Knowledge Point 21: Context Prevents the Reader’s Question Marks
reader's current knowledge
-> relevant context
-> specific problem
-> your claim
-> map of the argument如果第一句直接是 “I argue that coffee reduces lifespan”,读者会立即问:
11. Anatomy of an Introduction /
Knowledge Point 22: Hook Creates Relevant Attention
- topic 为什么值得注意;
- 哪个 tension 或 puzzle 需要解释;
- 什么事实打破常识;
Knowledge Point 23: Link Narrows the Focus
Many people drink coffee every day. <- hook
Its health effects therefore matter to a large population. <- link
This essay argues that...
Knowledge Point 24: Thesis States the Central Claim
This essay discusses social media.
This essay will examine three effects of social media.
而应是 claim:
Passive consumption, rather than social-media use alone, better explains why some young adults experience heightened anxiety online.
Knowledge Point 25: Organizational Statement Gives the Reader a Map
An organizational statement tells the reader what logical stages the argument will move through.
First I will discuss A, then B, then C.
The essay first distinguishes active participation from passive consumption, then explains how social comparison mediates the relationship between online activity and anxiety.
12. Five Hook Patterns /
Pattern 1: An Interesting or Controversial Question
What would remain of personal identity if a person woke with no memory of the past?
- 问完后不回答;
- 问一个答案显而易见的问题;
- 用 rhetorical question 代替 thesis。
Pattern 2: Funnel Method
broad context
-> narrower field
-> unresolved problem
Pattern 3: Relevant Quotation
quotation 必须:
- 与 argument 直接相关;
- 有 source;
- 需要 interpretation;
Pattern 4: Startling or Dramatic Statement
A community may exist for centuries before its collective identity becomes the center of political debate.
Pattern 5: Turning an Argument on Its Head
Common view...
However...
Reframed claim...例如:
Competitive sports are often presented as preparation for a competitive world. However, early participation may also create psychological costs that this account overlooks.
13. Fact Versus Opinion /
Knowledge Point 26: Evidence Can Be Disputed Without Becoming a Thesis
- data error;
- source dispute;
- measurement uncertainty。
| function | example |
|---|---|
| fact / evidence | A reported number of incidents occurred in a period. |
| interpretation | The pattern indicates a failure of a specific policy. |
| thesis / stance | Reducing access to a particular category of weapons would be more effective than relying on post-incident responses. |
Knowledge Point 27: The Best Test Is Reasonable Disagreement
14. Refining a Thesis with Counterargument /
While explanation A contributed to the outcome,
this essay argues that explanation B was more decisive because...
- 表明作者知道 competing explanation;
- 避免把复杂结果写成单一原因;
A refined thesis often does not deny the obvious explanation; it shows why another explanation matters more, works differently, or applies under different conditions.
15. A Reusable Workflow /
Step 1: Read the Assignment
标出:
- task verb: analyze / evaluate / compare / argue / recommend;
- required sources;
- genre;
- audience;
- length;
- citation style;
- AI policy;
- deadline and milestones。
Step 2: Turn the Topic into Questions
what; - 3 个
how / why; - 2 个
under what circumstances; - 1 个 strongest counterargument;
so what。
Step 3: Read for Tension
- disagreement;
- exception;
- missing mechanism;
- untested assumption;
- methodological limitation;
- unexplained pattern。
Step 4: Draft a Working Thesis
模板:
Although [common view / competing explanation], [your claim] because [mechanism or reason], particularly when [condition or scope].
Step 5: Stress-Test the Thesis
- Is it arguable?
- Is it specific?
- Is it supportable with available evidence?
- Does it overclaim?
- Does each key term have a clear meaning?
- What would the strongest informed critic say?
Step 6: Build an Argument Map
claim:
reader question answered:
evidence needed:
connection to thesis:Step 7: Draft the Introduction
hook:
link/context:
thesis:
organizational statement:Step 8: Reverse-Outline the Draft
16. Deep Phrases /
nuanced thesis
A nuanced thesis identifies the conditions, mechanisms, limits, or competing explanations that make a simple answer incomplete.
intellectual curiosity
Intellectual curiosity is the habit of turning received information into further questions.
complicate an argument
To complicate an argument is to test and refine it by introducing conditions, distinctions, counterarguments, or new perspectives.
anticipate the counterargument
Anticipating a counterargument means identifying the strongest reasonable objection before the reader has to raise it.
set the context
To set the context is to provide the information and logical expectations a reader needs before encountering the central claim.
organizational statement
An organizational statement previews the logical route of the argument.
discipline
- shared questions;
- accepted methods;
- evidence standards;
- genres;
- citation practices
的一套 academic practice。
17. Common Failure Modes /
Failure 1: Topic Instead of Thesis
This essay is about green fashion.
Failure 2: Fact Instead of Thesis
Social-media use has increased among young adults.
Failure 3: Instant Yes-or-No Position
Social media is bad.
没有 mechanism、scope、condition 或 evidence。
Failure 4: Sophisticated Language Hiding Empty Logic
- unclear claim;
- missing evidence;
- contradictory sections;
- weak paragraph transitions。
Failure 5: Hook Detached from the Argument
Failure 6: Listing Instead of Arguing
Failure 7: Weak Counterargument
Failure 8: New Argument in the Conclusion
Failure 9: Treating AI Output as Policy-Safe by Default
18. Homework /
- 选择一个与你专业相关、自己感兴趣的 topic;
- 构思一个不只是拍脑袋 yes / no 的 thesis;
- 写一小段 introduction;
- enticing lead / hook;
- link;
- thesis;
- 必要时加入 organizational statement;
- 语言必须由自己完成;
Homework Planning Sheet /
Topic:

Organizational statement:19. Self-Check /
20. Next Lecture Hooks /
- 如何进一步形成和修改 thesis;
- paragraph types and paragraph logic;
- sentence-level clarity;
- nominalization;
- subject-verb control;
- academic reading;
- citation and plagiarism rules。
