AE26 Module 1 - Welcome to the University
Reading Guide /
At university, you are not merely consuming knowledge; you are a junior scholar learning how to enter, understand, and contribute to ongoing disciplinary conversations.
1. Module Map /
What is a university?
-> university as a research community
-> faculties, departments, and disciplines
-> high school and university are different situations
-> good communication changes with the situation
-> scholarship is an ongoing conversation
-> a student-scholar listens before contributing
-> everyday technology becomes a shared inquiry
-> research at UBC shows how disciplines frame technology differently2. The University as a Research Community / 大学是什么
What will I take away when I leave?
- What kind of community am I entering?
- What languages and customs does it use?
- What work is already happening here?
- How can I eventually contribute?
Student, Consumer, or Junior Scholar?
A junior scholar learns both the content of a discipline and the ways that members of the discipline think, read, research, write, and speak.
3. How the University Is Organized /
| term | working meaning |
|---|---|
4. High School and University Are Different Situations
| dimension | high school tendency | university tendency |
|---|---|---|
5. Good Writing Suits Its Situation /
Writing is appropriate when its choices fit the subject, purpose, audience, genre, and writer’s position in that situation.
- 给朋友发消息和给 professor 写 email 的语气不同;
- lab report 与 position paper 的证据结构不同;
- 面向专家与面向公众时,术语解释程度不同;
6. Scholarship as an Ongoing Conversation
Burke’s Parlor /
arrive late
-> listen
-> identify what has already been said
-> understand the disagreement
-> make a relevant contribution
-> respond to othersThe Puzzle / 拼图
Originality does not mean ignoring previous scholarship; it means adding a defensible piece that fits, extends, questions, or rearranges what is already known.
7. Common University Writing Genres /
| genre | central move |
|---|---|
8. GenAI in Scholarly Situations / 生成式 AI 放在哪里
课程使用 The Economist 视频讨论 GenAI 的 strengths and weaknesses。
Why It Became Powerful
- Transformer architecture
Strengths
- generates convincing text;
- pattern matching and style transfer;
- supports coding with a tight feedback loop;
- can assist with many routine knowledge-work tasks。
Weaknesses
- black-box complexity and limited transparency;
- convincing language is not the same as factual accuracy;
- reliability is inadequate when new facts must be correct;
- automating most of a process does not remove the final human bottleneck;
- institutional and assignment rules still determine legitimate use。
Core judgment
Use GenAI where outputs can be checked; do not treat fluent output as verified knowledge.
Video Companion /
| approximate time | focus |
|---|---|
0:59 | transformer breakthrough |
1:29 | ChatGPT makes the technology widely accessible |
2:03 | strengths of large language models |
3:08 | coding and the tight feedback loop |
3:33 | opacity and black-box weakness |
3:59 | poor fit for discovering reliable new facts |
4:39 | possible economic and task-level effects |
5:16 | partial automation and the human rate-determining step |
9. Technologies of Everyday Life / 共同研究主题
- technology 怎样改变 everyday life;
- everyday needs、culture 与 power 怎样反过来塑造 technology;
Optional branch boundary
The History of the Car Cup Holder属于 Transportation 分支的 optional reading。
10. Six UBC Research Snapshots /
| scholar / field | technology question |
|---|---|
| George Grinnell / English and Cultural Studies | punk paper zines 如何形成 information-sharing culture |
11. The Module’s Check-ins /
Definition Activity
Scholarly Situations Quiz
Discussion
Exploring Research Check-in
