Scholarly Situation
A scholarly situation is the combination of subject, purpose, audience, genre, and writer position that determines what an appropriate academic contribution looks like.
The Five Questions
- Subject - What am I writing or speaking about?
- Purpose - What should this contribution accomplish?
- Audience - Who will use or evaluate it, and what do they already know?
- Genre - What recurring form answers this kind of situation?
- Writer position - What authority, responsibility, or limitation do I have here?
Why It Matters
Good writing changes when the situation changes.
