AE26 Module 2 - Listening Actively and Reading Critically

Reading Guide /

Active learners do not merely record information; they select, reorganize, question, and connect it for a future purpose.

1. Module Map /

enter the academic conversation
-> listen for ideas rather than transcribing words
-> choose a note structure that matches the material
-> recognize the genre and anatomy of a scholarly text
-> read sections in an order that matches your purpose
-> preview and question before close reading
-> annotate for gist while reading
-> reflect and adapt the strategy for university work

2. Active Listening Becomes Usable Notes /

Good notes are a selective reconstruction of meaning, not a verbatim copy of speech.

  • key concepts and discipline-specific terms;
  • main claims and the reasons supporting them;
  • examples, analogies, equations, diagrams, and contrasts;
  • 教授特别重复、停顿或强调的内容;

Before, During, and After Class

phaseuseful movewhy it matters

Handwriting or Laptop?

Four Note Structures

methodstructurebest fit
Cornellmain notes + cue/questions column + summary
Outlinehierarchy of headings and indented details
Mappingnodes, arrows, and spatial relationships
Chartingcolumns or categories compared across rows需要比较 theories, cases, causes, or properties

Recording boundary /

Lecture materials, recordings, slides, and classroom contributions may be protected by privacy, copyright, and course rules. Do not record, copy, or redistribute them without explicit instructor permission.

3. Academic Conventions Are Reading Signals /

Shared Expectations Across Disciplines

  • precise and accurate wording;
  • discipline-appropriate terminology;
  • qualified claims rather than sweeping generalizations;
  • inclusive language that avoids bias and stereotypes;
  • citations that give credit, expose the evidence trail, and make the writer accountable。

4. Anatomy of an Academic Research Article /

Common Front and Back Matter

sectionwhat it tells youhow a reader can use it

Humanities and Sciences Do Not Use the Same Middle

Humanities tendency:
Title -> Abstract -> Introduction/Literature Review -> Argument-based body -> Conclusion -> References

Sciences tendency:
Title -> Abstract -> Introduction/Literature Review -> Methods -> Results -> Discussion -> Conclusion -> References

5. Read in the Order Your Purpose Requires /

First-pass relevance check

title and keywords
-> abstract
-> discussion and conclusion
-> decide whether the article fits your question
-> introduction/literature review for context
-> methods and results for close evaluation
-> references for the next sources

A scientific paper is a current, reviewable status report, not a revelation of absolute truth.

  • Is the study based on a few cases or a sufficiently large sample?
  • Does it distinguish correlation from causation?
  • Do the authors present evidence that actually supports the conclusion?

6. Textbooks: Read for Application /

Why am I reading this, and how will I use it?

assessment purposeinformation to extract
multiple-choice testdefinitions, distinctions, details, and rapid-recall questions
essaymain ideas, relationships, and explanations in your own words
lab/data evaluationmethods, variables, data patterns, and interpretation
presentation/reportresearch gist, evidence, and communicable structure

Two small habits

  • Input-based habit: read for a fixed period, such as 15 minutes daily.
  • Output-based habit: produce something concrete, such as a short summary or half a page of notes.

7. Critical Reading: From Student to Student-Scholar

passive readingcritical reading
every text is read the same wayspeed and pattern change with genre and purpose
begin without questionsform questions before reading
skip unfamiliar terms and ideasmark confusion and investigate it
stop when the eyes reach the endpause, reflect, and revise notes

Questions Before Reading

Preview headings and visuals, then ask from broad to specific:

  1. What topic or issue is the writer covering?
  2. What is the thesis or main argument?
  3. What reasons and examples support it?
  4. How are those supports organized?
  5. Which details matter to the writer’s purpose?
  6. How does diction or word choice help produce the intended effect?

8. Annotation and Notes for Gist /

  • identify key concepts and claims;
  • rephrase them in your own words;
  • organize relationships;
  • ask questions and mark confusion;
  • connect the text to other ideas or sources;
  • record agreement, doubt, implication, or a possible use。

Notes for Gist

A gist note is a brief, provisional statement of what matters in a paragraph for the reader’s later purpose.

  1. keep highlighting minimal;
  2. aim for roughly one gist note per paragraph;
  3. avoid full-sentence copying;
  4. use point form and your own words;
  5. record not only the author’s point but, where useful, your response or question.
Before reading: preview headings and visuals
-> While reading: mark claims, questions, details, and connections
-> After reading: state the main point and why it matters

9. Activities and Assessment /

Note-taking Practice

Academic Conventions Quiz

Annotation Practice

Final Check-in: Adapting Strategies

10. Key Phrases /

  • Active listening -> listening to identify and process meaning, not merely hear or record words.
  • Good notes -> a selective reconstruction of ideas for later use.
  • Note-taking method -> a structure chosen to match the material and the future task.
  • Academic convention -> a recurring surface practice or conceptual move that helps a scholarly community communicate.
  • Academic research article -> a structured contribution that reports an investigation and connects it to prior scholarship.
  • Abstract -> a compressed relevance check, not a substitute for reading and citing the article itself.
  • Methods -> how the investigation was carried out.
  • Results -> what data or outcomes the investigation produced.
  • Discussion -> what the results mean, how they fit previous work, and where the study is limited.
  • Peer review -> evaluation by outside specialists before publication; quality control, not a guarantee of absolute truth.
  • Strategic reading -> changing reading order and depth according to purpose.
  • Critical reading -> analyzing both what a text says and how its choices shape the reader’s response.
  • Annotation -> visible evidence of questioning, paraphrasing, organizing, connecting, and evaluating while reading.
  • Notes for gist -> brief, own-word statements of what matters in each section for a later writing purpose.
  • Passive rereading -> repeated exposure that can increase familiarity without producing usable understanding.

11. Retrieval Questions /

  3. academic conventions
  5. 为什么初读研究论文时可以从 abstract 跳到 discussion/conclusion?
  7. peer review
