Acceptable Paraphrase

An acceptable paraphrase faithfully reconstructs another author’s idea in substantially new wording and structure while preserving attribution and citation.

合格转述是在忠实保留原意的前提下,用真正属于自己的语言和结构重建观点,同时保留归属与引用。

Four Requirements

  1. Represent the source’s meaning accurately.
  2. Write from understanding rather than patching synonyms into the original sentence.
  3. Mark every retained direct phrase with quotation marks.
  4. Provide an appropriate in-text citation and full reference.

Paraphrase still depends on the source. Changing the wording does not transfer ownership of the underlying idea.

Warning Signs

  • distinctive phrases copied without quotation marks;
  • source syntax retained with only a few word substitutions;
  • keywords rearranged while attribution disappears;
  • a quotation mark covering only part of the borrowed language;
  • citation present, but wording still falsely presented as your own.
