大学写作第 2 课 - 段落连贯、引用整合与改述

Reading Guide / 阅读说明

第 1 课 建立了 thesis -> outline -> introduction 的文章入口;第 2 课把视角移到读者真正阅读正文时的体验:每一句为什么出现在这里、每一段如何推进 thesis、来源怎样进入自己的论证,以及怎样避免只换几个词的假 paraphrase。

一句话主线

A coherent academic essay continually tells the reader what each part means, how it connects, and whose idea is being used.

连贯的学术文章会持续让读者知道:这一部分在说什么、它怎样连接前后,以及这里使用的是谁的观点。

1. What This Lecture Is About / 这节课在讲什么

整节课从 essay-level organization 一路缩小到 paragraph 和 source-level control:

orient the reader
-> maintain unity and coherence
-> conclude without adding unsupported ideas
-> give each paragraph one controlling point
-> use topic sentences as signposts
-> build claim-evidence-warrant support
-> integrate quotations into your own syntax
-> paraphrase from understanding and cite the source

课堂的核心审美不是“多用高级连接词”,而是让读者不必替作者补逻辑。

2. Orienting Readers / 先把读者带进来

Orienting readers 是提供刚好足够的 context,让读者理解接下来的句子为什么出现。课堂用“三明治后去公园散步”说明:如果中间原因是为了帮助消化,就应把这个 link 写出来,而不是让读者猜。

文学分析也一样。即使作品很有名,在直接讨论 minor character 前,用一个短 appositive 提醒作品的核心冲突,会让读者更容易进入分析。

Reader-centered writing supplies the missing link before the reader has to ask for it.

这不是无限补背景。真正的问题是:目标读者为了理解当前 claim,最低限度需要知道什么?这与 Reader-Centered Writing 直接相连。

3. Unity and Coherence / 相关与连贯不是一回事

Paragraph Coherence 包含两个互补要求:

  • Unity:每个 supporting sentence 都服务同一个 controlling idea;
  • Coherence:句子的顺序与连接使读者能够顺畅跟随。

课堂的历史学例子以“historians use different kinds of evidence”为中心:written primary sources、unwritten artifacts 和 secondary sources 都属于 evidence type;“历史学家还要判断证据真伪”虽然相关,却已经换成 evaluation,应移到下一段。

A sentence can be relevant to the essay but still belong in a different paragraph.

One paragraph, one controlling move

老师用英文写作习惯强调“意思变了就分段”。这不是机械追求短段,而是每段应有可辨认的工作:定义一种 evidence、解释一个 mechanism、处理一个 objection,或分析一个 example。

一个实用测试:

  1. 用一句话写出本段在做什么;
  2. 逐句追问它如何帮助完成这个任务;
  3. 如果某句开启了另一个问题,就移动、另起一段或删除。

Information order follows reader attention

超市男人凝视茄子的例子说明,写作顺序应跟随读者刚被激活的好奇心。第一句说“an interesting man”,下一句就应尽快解释他为什么 interesting;若突然转去描述 supermarket 很忙,读者会暂时失去焦点。

4. Conclusion / 结尾不是复制 thesis

结论首先要回收 thesis,但不能只换词重复,也不能突然加入未经正文论证的新 claim 或 evidence。

课堂给出三种 strong final thought:

  1. Link to a larger context:把正文已证明的 insight 联系到更广的历史、社会或现实情境;
  2. Provide nuance:点透正文已经铺垫的 tension、limitation 或 irony;
  3. State an implication:说明正文结论意味着什么、可能影响谁或改变什么理解。
restate the developed claim
-> synthesize what the body established
-> reveal a larger meaning already supported by that reasoning

课堂用 muckraking journalism 的当代延续、马克思主义的 dehumanization tension,以及文化整合的文学例子说明:好的 final thought 像“把前文点透”,不是从天而降。

A conclusion may deepen an established idea, but it should not ask the reader to accept an argument the body never made.

5. Topic Sentence as an Umbrella / 段首句先说明这一段要做什么

Topic sentence 是本段的 umbrella sentence:它概括下面句子的共同工作,使读者不必读到一半才猜出段落主题。

但 topic sentence 不能只写 Television is important. 这种大而空的判断。更可用的版本会标明具体 function,例如:

Television can play an educational role in everyday life.

后者告诉读者本段要证明的是哪一种 importance。

Prefer a narrow claim that the paragraph can actually support

课堂对比中英文习惯,强调英文 academic writing 常从具体对象、机制或 image 切入,而不是把“风格”“意义”“重要性”等大词直接当论点。这个提醒可以压缩成:

Name the specific relationship you will demonstrate, not merely the broad topic you will discuss.

6. Signposting / 让段首句同时显示全文位置

Signposting 比普通 topic sentence 多做两件事:

  1. 从上一段 transition 过来;
  2. 告诉读者当前段落在 thesis / organizational map 中走到哪里。

好的段首句因此常同时具有三层功能:

look back -> state the current paragraph's claim -> point forward

课堂展示了四种方式:

  • subordinate clause / complex sentence:用 although, while, because 等把旧内容压入从句,再突出新 claim;
  • question and answer:用设问把描述转向解释,但必须马上回答;
  • bridge sentence:一句话承接前段困境,同时预告下一段转机;
  • pivot:在段内承认一个方向后,用 yet, however, but 等转向真正重心。

Vermeer 画作的例子从“看似日常的现实场景”转到“艺术家主动组织构图”;Monet 火车站例子从 impressionism 的光影传统转向社会意义。转折词本身不是重点,重点是它们把文章地图显示给读者。

7. Logical Connection Beats Mechanical Connectors / 逻辑比连接词清单更重要

first, second, moreover, in addition 并非禁用;科学或程序性说明中仍可能合适。问题是通篇只靠这些标签,会让文章像清单。

课堂再次用“三明治 -> 消化 -> 公园”说明:如果后一动作由前一动作引起,直接写出因果关系,比 First... Second... 更自然。

同样应删减没有信息功能的 cue words,例如:

  • It is important to note that...
  • It can be said that...
  • Another important aspect is that...

如果后面的 claim 真的重要,直接说 claim;不要先花一层语言宣布“我现在要说重要的事”。

8. Supporting Sentences / 段落不能只有 claim 或只有例子

课堂把段落支持压缩为:

claim -> evidence -> warrant
  • Claim:本段要求读者接受什么?
  • Evidence:哪项 example、data、quotation 或 source 支持它?
  • Warrant:为什么这项 evidence 能支持这个 claim?中间的 reasoning 是什么?

老师强调 warrant / interpretation 应占重要位置。读者读你的文章,不是为了再次看到 source,而是为了理解你如何解释和使用它。

Evidence does not speak for itself; the warrant explains what the evidence proves and why.

“青少年驾驶事故”的对比段落显示:只列不系安全带、超速和竞速仍像清单;加入具体 example、脑发育研究并解释它如何连接 risk-taking,段落才开始形成论证。

9. Quote Integration / 引文必须进入你的句法和推理

Quote Integration 不等于把一句 quotation 放在 claim 后面。读者需要三个部分:

  1. Set-up:谁在什么情境下说这句话?
  2. Lead-in / grammatical integration:quotation 如何成为你自己句子的语法成分?
  3. Interpretation:这段原文为什么支持当前 claim?
set up the context
-> lead into a selective quotation
-> cite it
-> explain its function in your argument

《奥德赛》例子中,孤立的 she 和“让风睡觉”会迫使读者猜人物与暴风雨背景;先说明 Athena 平息几乎淹死 Odysseus 的 storm,再把短 quote 嵌入句子,关系才清楚。

Use direct quotation selectively

非文学论文通常优先 paraphrase,除非原作者措辞本身特别精确或值得分析。文学分析可以更频繁引用语言,但也应只截取真正分析的 phrase,而不是整段搬运。

课堂还提到 quotation editing:

  • 改变首字母大小写时可用 square brackets 标明;
  • 省略不影响原意的中间文字时,用合适的 ellipsis convention;
  • 任何删改都不能扭曲原作者意思。

具体标点规则仍应按 assignment 指定的 citation style 核对。

10. Paraphrase and Academic Integrity / 改述要从理解重新建构

课堂区分 direct quote、indirect quote / paraphrase 与 common knowledge。只要 sentence 依赖他人的非通识 idea,即使完全改写,也仍需要 Academic Citation。

Acceptable Paraphrase 的关键不是换同义词,而是:

  • 先理解 source;
  • 抽出 main claim 与 supporting facts;
  • 暂时离开原句结构;
  • 分别用自己的话重述这些信息;
  • 重新组合成服务自己论证的新句子;
  • 检查准确性并 citation。

课堂示范了“先拆主干,再拆细节,分别改述,最后重组”的方法。这比逐词替换更可靠。

Important correction to the classroom heuristic

老师提出“不要与原文连续两个词相同”作为强迫自己摆脱原句的练习。它可以提醒你改变结构,但 不能保证 paraphrase 合格:

  • 必要术语、专名和固定搭配可能必须重复;
  • 即使没有连续两个词相同,仍可能保留原文独特结构或未经引用的 idea;
  • academic integrity 判断的是 wording、structure、idea attribution 与 accuracy 的整体,而不是一个机械词数阈值。

因此真正检查应是:meaning accurate + wording/structure genuinely yours + quotation marked + source cited。

Patchwriting and mosaic plagiarism

  • Patchwriting / paraphrasing plagiarism:保留原句骨架,只替换少数词;
  • Mosaic plagiarism:从多个来源拼接信息,却不逐项 attribution,或让来源材料淹没自己的 reasoning。

即使每句都有 citation,文章若几乎只有 sources 而没有自己的 synthesis 与 warrant,也无法完成作者贡献;是否构成具体违规则由该课程政策判断。

Reusing your own prior assignment

未经教师许可,把一门课已经提交的作业再次交给另一门课,通常可能违反重复提交或 self-plagiarism 规则。正确做法是事先说明原作业,并向 instructor 询问能否改题、扩展或重新使用;以实际课程政策为准。

11. AI Policy Boundary / AI 检测说法不能当成通用事实

课堂对 AI 使用给出了强烈警告,但其中“经 AI 润色就会 100% 被检测”“检测百分比直接决定能否提交”等说法并不适合作为通用规则记录。AI detector 可能误判,学校、课程和 assignment 的规定也不同。

真正可执行的流程是:

  1. read the syllabus and assignment’s written AI policy;
  2. distinguish permitted feedback, translation, brainstorming, editing, and generation;
  3. preserve notes, drafts, source records, and revision history;
  4. verify every claim and citation yourself;
  5. disclose or cite AI use when required;
  6. ask the instructor before an ambiguous use。

Policy Boundary / 政策边界

这是非官方预备课。老师的风险提醒可以提高警觉,但 detector 数字、自动处罚和“哪种使用一定允许/禁止”都不能替代未来课程的书面规则。

12. Class Examples / 课堂例子在证明什么

ExampleWriting lesson
sandwich -> digestion -> parkwrite the causal link instead of making the reader infer it
historical evidence paragrapha sentence may fit the essay but violate paragraph unity
man staring at eggplants in a busy supermarketorder details around the reader’s active question
muckraking journalism and modern medialink an established insight to a larger context in the conclusion
Marx and dehumanizationa final nuance must be prepared in the body
cultural integration in a novelan implication grows from previously analyzed struggle
camping suppliesan umbrella topic sentence turns a list into a paragraph
Vermeer / Monet paintingsa signpost can bridge description, interpretation, and the essay map
teen drivingevidence needs interpretation, not just accumulation
Athena calming the stormset up and grammatically integrate a quotation
opposable-thumbs passageparaphrase by decomposing meaning and rebuilding structure

13. Key Phrases / 一句话对应关系

  • Orient readers -> provide the minimum context needed to follow the next move without guessing.
  • Unity -> every sentence in a paragraph serves one controlling purpose.
  • Coherence -> ideas appear in an order and relationship the reader can follow.
  • Topic sentence -> the sentence that states the paragraph’s specific controlling idea.
  • Umbrella sentence -> a topic sentence broad enough to cover all supporting sentences, but specific enough to guide them.
  • Signpost -> language showing how the current move connects to the essay’s larger argument map.
  • Bridge sentence -> a sentence that closes one line of thought while opening the next.
  • Pivot -> a marked turn from a concession, expectation, or earlier direction toward the writer’s main emphasis.
  • Cue words -> empty announcements about what the writer is about to say; remove them when the claim can stand directly.
  • Claim -> the proposition a paragraph asks the reader to accept.
  • Evidence -> source material, data, example, or observation offered in support of a claim.
  • Warrant -> the reasoning that explains why the evidence supports the claim.
  • Quote integration -> embedding selected source language in context, grammar, citation, and analysis.
  • Set-up -> information identifying the speaker, situation, and relevance before a quotation.
  • Lead-in -> wording that grammatically connects the writer’s sentence to the quotation.
  • Paraphrase -> an accurate reconstruction of source meaning in the writer’s own language and structure, with citation.
  • Patchwriting -> lightly modifying source wording while retaining too much of its language or structure.
  • Mosaic plagiarism -> assembling unattributed pieces from multiple sources into apparently original prose.
  • Strong final thought -> a larger context, nuance, or implication that deepens an idea already established in the body.

14. Retrieval Questions / 回忆问题

  2. unity 和 coherence 分别检查什么?
  3. 为什么一条与 essay 相关的 sentence 仍可能不属于当前 paragraph?
  4. conclusion 怎样“升华”而不加入新论点?
  5. topic sentence 为什么既不能太宽,也不能只是 topic label?
  6. signpost 比普通 topic sentence 多完成哪两件事?
  7. 为什么逻辑连接通常比 first/second/moreover 更自然?
  8. claim、evidence 和 warrant 如何形成一个完整支持链?
  9. quote integration 的 set-up、lead-in 和 interpretation 各做什么?
  10. 哪些情况下 direct quote 比 paraphrase 更有必要?
  11. 为什么“没有连续两个相同单词”不能保证 paraphrase 合格?
  12. patchwriting 与 mosaic plagiarism 有什么区别?
  13. 为什么引用很多来源仍可能缺少 authorial contribution?
  14. 重复提交自己的旧作业前应该做什么?
  15. 面对 AI policy,为什么不能依赖 detector 百分比判断?

15. Homework and Next Step / 作业与下节课接口

  • 本节未新增强制作业;老师要求尚未完成第 1 课 introduction 作业的同学先补交。
  • 课堂把一项 signposting 判断练习留作自行查看:根据段首句推测上一段与当前段的内容。
  • 下节课预告将继续讲 citation styles 的具体区别与注意事项。

Connected Notes / 连接
