AE26 Module 5 - Speaking in the University

Reading Guide /

Academic speaking is a situation-aware contribution made understandable through preparation, delivery, listening, and response.

1. Module Map /

identify the speaking situation
-> decide what the audience needs
-> organize a clear contribution
-> prepare content, delivery, visuals, and technology
-> speak and listen actively
-> respond to questions and uncertainty
-> use feedback to improve the next attempt

2. Speaking Situations /

Office hours

  • 澄清 assignment、lecture concept 或 feedback;
  • 测试一个还不成熟的想法;
  • 讨论学习方法和下一步资源;

I don't understand anything

Class discussion and small groups

  • ask for clarification;
  • connect the current point to a reading or earlier idea;
  • paraphrase a peer before adding or challenging;
  • identify an assumption or implication;
  • summarize where the group has reached。

Formal presentations

3. The Speaking Situation /

  1. What is my topic?
  2. Who is my audience?
  3. What do I believe or want the audience to understand?
  4. Why am I speaking in this situation?

The same idea must be redesigned when the audience, purpose, time limit, or mode changes.

4. Prepare Content and Delivery /

Build a listener-followable spine

  • opening 说明 topic、purpose 和方向;
  • body 只保留支持核心信息的少数要点;
  • transitions 明示现在在哪里、下一步是什么;

Rehearse aloud

  • 删除不服务主线的内容;
  • 把难说或过长的句子改成自然口语;
  • 标出需要放慢、停顿或强调的位置;
  • 练习看提示后重新面对听众,而不是逐字朗读;

5. Visuals and Online Speaking /

Online presentation

  • 提前测试 microphone、camera、screen sharing 和 file format;
  • 关闭无关通知,准备稳定、可读的共享画面;
  • 看镜头与看 notes 之间保持自然切换;
  • 用 verbal signposts 补偿线上环境较弱的非语言线索;

6. Listening, Questions, and Psychological Safety /

Psychological Safety

一个 good listener / respondent 会:

  • 让发言者完成意思,不急于抢答;
  • paraphrase 后确认自己是否理解正确;
  • 针对 idea 提问,不攻击 person;
  • 以具体、可行动的方式回应;
  • 为较少发言的人留出进入讨论的空间;

7. UBC Supports /

  • communication and writing support;
  • academic advising 与 program-specific services;
  • international student advising;
  • accessibility、wellbeing 或 technology support;
  • instructor / TA office hours。

Seeking support is not evidence that you do not belong. It is part of learning how the university’s academic system works.

最终任务选择一种 promising 或 troubling 的 technology,用 one slide + one-minute voice-over:

  • briefly introduce the technology;
  • explain why it is notable from your point of view;
  • use clearly laid-out visuals/text and credit sources;
  • make the speech audible and understandable to the audience。

9. Key Phrases /

  • Academic speaking -> a purposeful, audience-aware contribution delivered through speech and interaction.
  • Office hours -> scheduled access to an instructor or TA for specific academic questions, feedback, and idea development.
  • Class participation -> helping a shared inquiry move forward by asking, connecting, explaining, challenging, or summarizing.
  • Active listening -> attending to another person’s meaning closely enough to paraphrase and respond to it.
  • Verbal signpost -> spoken language that tells listeners where the presentation is and how ideas connect.
  • Rehearsal -> practicing aloud to test timing, clarity, delivery, and recovery before the real situation.
  • Presentation visual -> a visible support for the spoken message, not a transcript of it.
  • Psychological safety -> confidence that one can ask, admit uncertainty, or disagree without humiliation.
  • Speaking anxiety -> a manageable response reduced through preparation, familiarity, gradual exposure, and recovery plans.
  • Good response -> an idea-focused, respectful, and actionable contribution grounded in accurate listening.

10. Retrieval Questions /

  2. office hours
  7. online presentation
  8. psychological safety
  9. good listener
  10. Module 5 final check-in 怎样为 Module 6 铺路?
